FCDO - RESEARCH AND EVIDENCE DIRECORATE

The Research and Evidence Directorate (RED) brings together multiple departments to achieve the following objectives:

  • Expert Analysis and Advice: Delivering high-quality, evidence-based analysis and advice to inform decision-making across the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

  • Harnessing UK Science Strengths: Leveraging the UK's scientific expertise to drive research and development (R&D) investments will enhance FCDO’s impact on development and diplomacy.

  • Science and Technology Partnerships: Building and managing global science and technology partnerships to maximize the UK’s international influence.

RED is pivotal in ensuring the FCDO has access to cutting-edge external expertise, supporting the UK’s ambition to become a global leader in science and technology. The directorate collaborates closely with research institutions and the private sector to deliver significant impact. Additionally, it supports FCDO’s international network of expert advisers working in countries worldwide to drive development and diplomacy initiatives. UK influence is bolstered through international science and technology partnerships facilitated by the Science and Innovation Network and Regional Research Hubs.

1. Research Analysts: Research Analysts are geographical and thematic experts who provide timely, high-quality, evidence-based research and analysis for FCDO ministers and senior officials. Organized into 10 Research Groups, these analysts play a vital role in the policymaking process by delivering research that informs departmental strategies and contributes to the FCDO's International Academy training programs.

2. FCDO Research Advisory Group (RAG): The Research Advisory Group (RAG) offers strategic guidance, rapid insights, and independent evaluations to support the UK government’s objectives, including eradicating global poverty and research and development goals.

3. Funding Opportunities: Funding opportunities, including calls for proposals, tenders, and procurement events, are published on the following like platforms FCDO Research Commissioning Centre ,International Development Funding (GOV.UK), FCDO Research, Science and Innovation LinkedIn etc.
